What You Need to Know and Do About the Covid-19 Coronavirus

  • Author

The COVID-19 coronavirus is a variation of the common cold virus. Many of the ways to help prevent the spread are the same as the cold or flu; the most significant difference is that there is no natural human immunity to the COVID-19 coronavirus. Here are some of the most important things to know about COVID-19 and how you can stay safe and help keep others safe.

About the COVID-19 Coronavirus

The COVID-19 coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus, and that is the most challenging part of this virus, as there is no natural human immunity. Early reports show that about 80% of all cases have been mild. The virus is spread through close contact with an infected person by droplets and contaminated surfaces. Certain individuals are at greater risk for severe illness or complications, including those over age 60, individuals with a history of diabetes, cardiac, respiratory problems such as asthma, and people with a compromised immune system from other diseases. Going somewhere that the virus exists doesn’t mean you need to be tested. You should be tested if you come into contact with an infected person or are having symptoms; your healthcare provider will help you determine if testing is needed. There is no cure for the virus, and no vaccine currently available. Treatment for the virus consists of treating individual symptoms. The only prevention is to help stop the spread of the virus.

Protecting Yourself and Others

There are things you can do to help keep yourself and others safe and healthy. Washing your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is the most effective way to clean your hands; keep hand sanitizer around when you cannot wash your hands. Cover all sneezes and coughs, wear a face mask at all times when out in public. Try and stay at home as much as possible and avoid large gatherings or events. Avoid in-person contact with those who are considered high-risk like the elderly or those who are ill. Avoid travel if possible. Frequently wash high-touch areas such as doorknobs, keyboards, light switches, keys, etc.

Take Action

If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in contact with an infected person, especially if you are in a high-risk category, you should contact your medical provider first through phone or an e-visit. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include a fever of 100.4 degrees or above, cough, shortness of breath, and sore throat. In most cases, your healthcare provider will direct you to treat the symptoms with rest, fever-reducing medication, pain relievers, over-the-counter flu medicine, and adequate rest. If you are having difficulty breathing, chest pains, or are feeling very ill, go to the emergency department.
